When should my crane and overhead hoist be inspected? - McDal Corporation

When should my crane and overhead hoist be inspected?

This is a question we are asked frequently, and OSHA Standard 1910.179, Section J, answers that question.

In short, here are a few key points from the Standard:

  • There are two general classifications, periodic and frequent.
  • Periodic inspections are required on 1 to 12-month intervals, generally,
  • Frequent inspections are required on daily to monthly intervals, generally.
  • The interval appropriate for your situation is “dependent upon the nature of the critical components of the crane and the degree of their exposure to wear, deterioration, or malfunction.”  (www.osha.gov)

Additionally, OSHA Standard 1910.179, Sections K, L, M, N and O include performance testing requirements.  For instance, prior to initial use, all new and altered cranes must be tested to insure compliance with OSHA Standard, Section K, for these functions:  hoisting and lowering, trolley travel, bridge travel, and limit switches, locking and safety devices
